    WHO IS PAOLA LICCIARDI?

Paola is a photographer and videomaker from Rivoli (a town nearby Turin) where she has been running her own business MONOCROMO studio for 5 years. Her profession started 15 years ago, working for her aunt's photographic studio, where Paola began to work on the post-production, that is, the phase following the shot.

Thanks to this experience Paola achieved some fundamental skills which, besides enriching her educational background of Commercial Art and Photography, led her finally working on the field.

Today Paola brilliantly directs her professional activities in MONOCROMO studio, mainly specialized in wedding services, photography and video, in partnership with Wedon-Produzioni Video.

What distinguishes Paola's professionalism is the ability to grasp the essence of the couples who choose her studio, supporting them step by step both before and during the ceremony.

HOW DID THE PASSION FOR PHOTOGRAPHY START?

Photography comes in Paola's life unexpectedly: as a post-productionist she was not very interested in photography itself and she didn't even like it that much. She was not thinking at photography as a potential career path. Only later Paola realizes that, actually, photography already formed part of her every day life, after all pictures were the substantial element forming her occupation.

"Only later she realized  the photography was already part of her (life)"

WHAT SHE IS INSPIRED BY IN HER PROFESSION?

The calm. Often in complex and stressful events, such as marriage, she feels the need to find moments of peace and tranquility, essential to catch her breath and get inspiration for new shots. Paola's photohgraphy is pure creativity and, like all creative activities, needs concentration that she finds in music: Dire Straits and The Beatles are the groups she prefers.

"With the first Reflex she was more and more fully awared to want to become a professional photographer"

HOW IMPORTANT IS TO COUNT ON SOMEBODY?

Paola tells how her father has contributed to the enhancement of her potential, believing in herself and spurring her to follow the path the most she was passionated about. When she got her first Reflex from her parents she was more and more fully awared to want to become a professional photographer.

WHICH ARE THE DIFFICULTIES FACED IN HER WORK?

Paola encountered many obstacles along her career path, especially at the beginning when she first worked as post-productionist. At that time Paola worked for many photo studios in Turin, Ancona, in Lazio, Sicily and Campania. Despite she wanted to bring innovation, making it clear to colleagues that there was something else than consolidated setup, for example about the photomontage style, in each of those employments her talent and her brilliant attitude were overwhelmed.

The most difficult part of Paola's path was about the income. Nowadays very often employees experience troubles when it comes to be paid from their company; within the professional field this may happen much more frequently than any other working category. Paola tells about all the escamotages used by her former employers to justify the delays in payments. Then, with the experience, ''I learnt that first they pay me and then I do the work!", she says.
Paola never breaks down, the difficulties in her work are not lacking, and it happens to deal with moments of insecurity that she faces with high level of tenacity.
From Paola's interview it raises another important aspect that sometimes plays against her, at least at first glance: her age.
Paola is a young photographer and she has been directing her studio for five years now so enterprising. During the preliminary meetings with customers she fears the future bride and the groom might not feel as comforted as they would need because of her young age. Furthermore, considering that on average nowadays people get married later and later here is that difference in age is more highlighted.

Although generally young professional have little experience this is not the case: at the end of Paola's work the bride and groom confess as did not expect that much from a professional photographer so young!

"Being a woman in this field is a great advantage .."

    AS A WOMAN?

Paola in her experience as a photographer has not faced any particular gender-based discrimination: "being a woman in this field is a great advantage" she says. When couples engage my photo-studio for the wedding service, brides feel very satisfied and somehow comforted by the fact it is a woman to take photos of them.
Before the moment of getting inside the church, Paola follows step by step the bride while she is getting dressed and prepared for the cerimony. These moments represent to Paola the chance to get closer to the bride, understanding her needs and emotions. The intimacy and harmony Paola reaches with the bride are pretty clear in pictures and it wouldn't be so easy if she were a man, especially when the bride is undressed.

Back to past professional experiences, Paola admits to have lived explicit advances by a photographer she worked for: he started with favours and devious kindnesses, then gradually he became more and more clear.
After she categorically refused any non-professional relationship with her employer, Paola started to receive less and less work until she stopped to work with him.

"As a child she dreamed of

becoming a cop or a soldier"

WHAT PAOLA DREAMED WHEN SHE WAS A CHILD ?

Paola remembers that as a child she dreamed of becoming a police officer or a soldier, when it was still rare to find women in these professions

    DREAMS AND FUTURE PLANS?

Thinking about the future Paola would like to continue to grow professionally: she is very satisfied about what she has already achieved and what she really wishes is to go on like this because what she owns today is enough!

Being awared and satisfied about the present is such an important detail when it comes to look at the future.

ARE WOMEN TODAY TRULY FREE TO CHOOSE THEIR DESTINY?

Taking in consideration the working sphere, Paola sees women as emancipated enough, especially in her working field where more and more women photographers are increasing
