    WHO IS DOMINIKA BOZIC?

Dominika is a Croatian artist working passionately as illustrator, designer and creator. She grew up in Osijek, in Croatia, in a big and happy family:

“My father had a small business in making kids clothes and my grandmother was a seamstress. So I was surrounded with fabrics and patterns since young age” she says.

After five years spent in Qatar, since 2015 Dominika is living in Crakow, Poland. As all the other interviewees Dominika is an enterprising freelance since 2011 when she started feeling deeply in love with art.

HOW DID THE PASSION FOR ART START?

Dominika’s life was already connected to art since her studies in Fashion and Textile Design, at the University of Zagreb. She then had several job experiences as Window Decorator, Interior Decorator and Marketing Manager

In 2011 Dominika’s husband had to move to Doha, in Qatar, because of his work. She then left her last job in Zagreb and moved there with him:

we didn’t want to live separately 5000 kilometers away from each other”, she explains.

It was then when Dominika fell body and soul into the artistic world. She first got in touch with the Qatar Fine Arts Society, later becoming a member of it, and the International Artists Doha Group.

Her creativity and the will to have new connections with the local artists pulled her to establish a community of people she could share her passion for handmade crafts with. She led the group until her stay in Doha and since then the community is still active, a fact which makes Dominika very proud about.

Dominika spent in Qatar five years before to back in Europe with her husband. Since 2015 they are in fact living in Cracow, in Poland, where she still works as a professional artist. She realizes amazing different products: paintings, handmade items, such as customized pillow, toys and clothes.

"After almost five years of our life in the desert, in 2015 we moved back to Europe, to the beautiful Cracow city, in Poland, where I keep on working with my art"

THE ROLE OF PASSION IN HER WORK?

"Passion is everything. I felt that when I was young and playing volleyball, I was so determined to give my best while some of the girls played just for money. It is the same with my art, I am doing it with the passion and with love. I am so passionate about handmade and unique things that I have the need to transfer it to a community where I live. So, while I lived in Doha in Qatar I founded a community of people who make handmade things... Since I left the community remained active which makes me very proud. And here in Cracow, where I live at the moment, I recently started an art group for the International Women’s Association Krakow".

Dominika usually works at home, in her studio where she is free to express her creativity painting and creating. This working solution is the best for her, as she very often needs to manage both the artistic side and the web communication one.

She mostly creates products according to her customs’ online orders:

“people like personalized and customized things. And most of the orders come from online orders, so I spend lots of time on social media, reading and replying emails, taking and editing photos”

She is very dinamic in finding new professionals to work with, for example with local designers and seamstresses. As many of her works are made on fabrics and clothes she very often cooperates with seamstresses, altough she generally sews her items by herself as well.

"While I lived in Doha in Qatar I founded a community of people who make handmade things. Since I left the community remained active which makes me very proud"

HOW MUCH IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE A PERSON TO COUNT ON?

In life it is generally quite important being surrounded by supportive people to count on both psychologically and financially. This fact has double value for freelance artists and artisans as Dominika admits:

“this is a huge fact in the career I have chosen. It is not always perfect and my husband is always here to support me, morally and financially.."

It is worth mentioning another aspect in freelance professional’s lives. Most of the times artists and artisans spend a high amount of time working alone or so. As it turned out from the previous interviews the tipical working locations, for these kind of careers, are based at home or in some cases in a studio. Although co-working spaces are getting more and more popular around metropolitan cities, especially for some professionals, working at home seems to be more confortable and the easiest choice. The lack of socialization during the working time can be overcome by joining colleagues in events and activities.

For instance, Dominika speaks about her personal need to “belong to some groups”

“we artists are usually working alone at home or at the atelier and it can be isolating and depressing when you don’t have anyone who understands you to talk to and get the feedback from. Therefor I try to join groups of like-minded people”.

As a matter of fact, in Crakow Dominika leads an Art Group for the International Women’s Association Krakow.

WHICH DIFFICULTIES DOMINIKA FACED IN HER WORK?

Dominika does not mention any particular difficulties occurred in her career path. Even when she was living in Qatar, a place where life might seem not that easy for a woman, she never faced troubles. In Crakow there is something new to challenge Dominika's work. As she explains, the problem is the language barrier, although it is slowly changing, because more and more people do speak english.

She also mentions how difficult is to make Poles interested in her art, something she is not really worried about:

"luckily, Cracow is a touristic town plus lots of expats live here", she says.

    AS A WOMAN?

"I started doing art while I lived in Qatar and people would assume I would have difficulties as a women there but it was not an issue at all".

ARE WOMEN TODAY TRULY FREE TO CHOOSE THEIR DESTINY?

In Dominika’s opinion nowadays everyone if works hard has the opportunity to reach dreams and ambitions. Her optimistic message expresses high strenght and hope no matter the gender one belongs to. According to Dominika’s point of view it’s just a matter of awareness people must have in order to take the best decision to improve their career:

“Everyone is free to choose their working or life path, we are facing problems every day and need to make decisions small or big every day no matter the gender”, says Dominika.

IN DOMINIKA'S EXPERIENCE DOES THE RELIGION OR THE CULTURE AFFECT SOMEHOW WOMEN'S INDEPENDENCY IN POLAND?

Dominika has been living in Crakow two years now and despite Poland still represents one of the most catholic Country in Europe (Win-Gallup International Global Index Of Religiosity And Atheism-2012), she has never experienced any religious nor cultural pressures there.
The daily biggest issue living in Poland comes from the language, but as she claims “more and more people do understand and speak english”.

WHAT DID DOMINIKA DREAM WHEN SHE WAS A CHILD ?

Dominika had lots of dreams when she was a little girl, one of them was to become a famous fashion designer.

    DREAMS AND FUTURE PLANS?

Being an art creator it is what makes Dominika satisfied: “it is what I enjoy the most and I hope to be doing that forever”.
